Chelsea Flower Show 2017 – The Winners

Garden Design Tips From The Experts
Restoring garden furniture for summer

RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the highlight of the horticultural calendar each and every year.

Thousands of visitors descend on London Gate from all over the world, to see the best gardeners on the planet showcase their work. We always try and get one of the team down to Chelsea, it’s the front line of innovation when it comes to garden design; and will influence the following year’s trends more than any other event. Here’s what went down in this year’s big categories:

Best Show Garden

James Basson scooped this year’s top award with his ‘M&G Garden.’ Taking its inspiration from an abandoned quarry in Malta, this year’s winner boasted harsh blocks of limestone; peppered with grasses, perennials and other arid Mediterranean natives. Basson’s theme was the human impact on the natural world, something immediately evident in the contrast between the natural world and the limestone; which featured raw buzzsaw cuts in the rock. Best Fresh Garden

At the other end of the spectrum, Kate Gould’s winning installation threw everything into the smallest space. ‘City Living’ imagines a series of urban apartment spaces split over three levels, exploring leafy and inviting environments in cramped conditions. Not just created for a show piece, Gould’s team are active in providing innovative solutions for inner city gardens. More info.

Best Artisan Garden

Similarly to the ‘Best Show Garden’ of this year, Graham Bodle’s ‘Walker’s Wharf Garden’ highlights the impact of industry on the natural world. Centred around a derelict industrial wharf, the installation boasts retaining walls created from recycled wood and metal; alongside rusting cogs and an iconic lichen-covered skull. Inspired by England’s northern waterways, the garden is home to pines and conifers peppered with grasses around the hard industrial edges. More info.
